MOAS SCHOLARSHIPS
The idea of a MOAS Scholarship Program was
initially proposed in 1997, and subsequently formulated and approved by the
membership in 1998. The result has been a fairly simple yet comprehensive
program to provide deserving local youth a financial jurnpstart on their post
high school education or training goals.
In January 2004 the MOAS Board of Directors
approved changes that shift the focus of the program to promoting scholarships
to JROTC participants and to family members of MOAS members. In 2005, the Board
approved the addition of a merit scholarship to a student not necessarily
enrolled in JROTC, but one who is recommended by a MOAS member.
This student must meet the same criteria as outlined below. In 2007 , the
Scholarship Board updated the criteria as outlined below.
MOAS will award up to a maximum of five (5) scholarships per year to high school
seniors (not including the Taylor scholarship) to be allocated as follows:
1. One (1) each JROTC scholarship for a senior at Booker, Riverview, Sarasota,
and Sarasota Military Academy.
2. One (1) merit scholarship open to any senior in schools located in the
Greater Sarasota area who are recommended by an MOAS member or who are a child
or Grandchild of an MOAS member. In addition, the application must be endorsed
by a senior member of the school’s academic department.
3. Should one of the JROTC school allocations or the merit scholarship not be
utilized due to non-submission, non-selection or ineligibility of nominees,
the scholarship may be awarded to another fully qualified applicant from
any school.
A SAT score to 1500 out of a possible 2400 is required to be considered by the
Scholarship Committee. All applicants must complete a standard application form
that addresses their activities related to community service, leadership, work,
recognition/awards received, and includes a short essay on a subject to be
provided. Selection of the best qualified candidates will he finalized in a
group meeting of the Scholarship Committee at which time the winners to be
proposed to the Board of Directors will he determined.
Scholarship winners will be advised in writing that in order to receive the
award, evidence of enrollment in an institution of higher learning must be
furnished the MOAS Chapter Treasurer. Once the evidence is received, the
Treasurer will forward the award payable to the winner at his/her home of
record. If the scholarship winner has not complied with this requirement by
April 1 of the year following the award, the award will be forfeited.
The Chair or Vice Chair of the Scholarship Committee will visit each area high
school to advertise and promote the program. In addition, letters will be sent
to each school guidance counselor and Senior Army Instructor (SAl) to focus
their attention on the opportunities available to their students. Applications
must be submitted in completed form to the Chairman of the committee no later
than 4:00 PM the 31st of March.
