March 2012 - S-O-T Video

Colonel Todd Royar, Commander of the Army 159th Aviation Brigade, has received many S-O-T boxes from Church of the Palms, Sarasota, this past year. He and his command recently left Afghanistan and are stationed at Ft. Campbell, Ky. On March 18th, He travelled from there to thank the church, in its morning services, for its support and to tell how much the boxes mean to the troops. He is introduced in the YouTube, below, by Pastor Dr. Stephen D. McConnell.

An example of our S-O-T work - May 2009 MOAS Memorial Day effort -

Report from John & Carol O'Brien, who headed up the effort -

Memorial Day SOT was a great success.   We set up in the same visible location as last year, the ceremony MC noted our presence, and we had a great turnout of volunteers with Jon and Mary Gordon, Len Friedlander, Joe and Nicky Dovener, Ray O'Connell and friends from Lakewood Ranch Hurricane Preparedness, Mike and Patt Staley (frequent YAHOO guests). We handed out 210 kits. The public, as last year at the Veteran's Day Parade, was very supportive and thanked us for making this available to them.

Letter from BG (Ret) James Hesson, "Support Our Troops" Coordinator

The Military Officers Association of America (MOAA) Sarasota Chapter has been sponsoring an effort to provide packages for our deployed troops.  Churches, civic associations, and businesses have joined us in this effort. Mail is important to our troops and these packages are appreciated. I quote from a message of a Company Commander of a unit previously deployed in Baghdad:

“E CO, 1-64 Armor Battalion truly appreciates all of the support you and your organization provide not only to us but all of the soldiers deployed in the support of freedom. Your efforts are a great reminder of one of the reasons we are here and a constant reminder to which we all wish to return. The support you have provided has made a lasting impact which is in turn has inspired our Soldiers to provide all that they can to the people in the communities we are responsible to protect and support.”

Supporting our troops by provided packages is not a political statement about the ongoing combat but an act of human compassion to let our service members know we support them, have them in our thoughts and prayers, and wish for their safe return.

All the information you need to send a package is included in this web site.

If you wish to contribute more or know someone who wishes to help in the form of cash donations in the form of checks, please advise them that the MOAA is a Section 501(c)(3) tax-exempt organization with Tax ID #65-0883860 and as such donations to MOAA for these support purposes are income tax charitable tax deductions.  While any donations are appreciated, it is estimated that $50.00 will be the upper limit on preparing and shipping a box and as such is a good multiple for donation purposes.  Send checks made out to "MOAS – Support Our Troops", to the following address:
